Rio De Janeiro - Christ The Redeemer

This Art Deco monument is the largest of its kind and is usually the first thing most people think of when planning a sightseeing trip to Rio.

Sitting at 700m (2,300 feet) above the city on Mount Corcovado, wherever you are in Rio, you are always under the watchful eye of Christ the Redeemer.

Sculptor Paul Landowski and engineers Albert Caquot and Heitor da Silva Costa are the men behind the legendary statue of Jesus Christ called Christ the Redeemer.

Christ the Redeemer stands at 38 meters tall and its arm span measures in at 30m. This Jesus Christ statue is made out of sandstone and reinforced concrete. Brazil’s world-famous monument was first unveiled in 1931.

Christ the Redeemer is a spectacular sight during the day and as it begins to get dark. At night, the statue lights up the sky above it and can be seen from afar. As the rest of the mountain is not lit up, the monument appears to be floating in mid-air.

There are many different tours available where a guide can talk you through all the interesting history of the area and the statue. You can also explore independently and do it in your own time. The early morning tour is a good way to beat the crowds and see the sun rise.
