Sloths

The world’s slowest animal, the Sloth resides in Ecuador. Built for life in the treetops, the animals are that slow that algae grows on their furry coats, giving them a green hue that is ideal for camouflaging in the trees in the South American rain forest.

The majority of their time is spent hanging from branches, gripping on with their powerful long claws. Sleeping from 15-20 hours a day, even when they are awake they remain mostly motionless, occasionally taking a painfully slow journey along a brand towards some succulent leaves.

It is highly likely you will spot a Sloth during a hike in the Ecuadorian Amazon. Although, as seen on online videos with millions of hits, on numerous occasion they have to be rescued from the roadside, as they seriously struggle to navigate on solid ground. On land, Sloths possess no power in their legs and their long claws cause extra problems. They have no protection from large predators, therefore are in a very dangerous position on land.

Taking a trek through the amazon is highly recommended to see these rare and bizarre animals. Constantly looking like they’re smiling, these lazy creatures are very fascinating to tourists and holiday makers, unlike anything many have ever seen before.
