Climbing the mountain is a challenge, but there are rewarding vistas at the top. Follow a thrilling mountain trail to the Temple of the Moon where a shrine has been built into the side of a cave. This cave is thought to have housed mummies. Not everyone is lucky enough to get tickets to visit Huayna Picchu on the day, so it’s recommended to book in advance.

It’s a good idea to pick a clear day, so there is no mist or clouds obstructing your view. It is also smart to do the climb early in the morning to avoid the tourist rush hour. The 7am climb is preferable because it’s cooler and quieter. If you don’t want the early rise on your holiday, that’s understandable – the same outstanding view will still be there later on in the day!
