BY SEA Cruise liners occasionally call at Mauritius, either on round-the-world voyages or on cruises from southern and eastern Africa. A Costa Croisières ship is based in Port Louis from December to March and operates cruises in the region, taking in Réunion, Madagascar, the Seychelles and east Africa.

Cargo ships come frequently but few of them carry paying passengers and those that do only carry about a dozen.

Réunion Mauritius Pride, operated by Mauritius Shipping Corporation (see above), sails around seven times a month between Mauritius and Réunion. There are 248 aircraft-style seats and nine double-berth cabins. The crossing takes 12 hours. For non-residents of Mauritius, seats cost from Rs3,250 per person return and cabins are Rs4,500 per person return. Mauritius Trochetia is a new, well-equipped ship with first- and second-class cabins and suites. Facilities include a gym, shop and restaurant. It sails around five times a month between Mauritius and Réunion, and once a fortnight continues on to Toamasina in Madagascar. Cabins cost from Rs3,450 per person return.
