The settlement of St-Leu was created in 1776 and soon became an important beef-rearing and coffee-growing region. By 1806, the population of this prosperous town consisted of 463 free people and 5,352 slaves. A few buildings remain from this era: the town hall, formerly a coffee warehouse, and the church, which was begun in 1788. The Chapelle de Notre Dame de la Salette, behind the church, was begun during the cholera epidemic of 1859 as a plea for St-Leu to be spared. It was, although thousands died in neighbouring towns.

Today St-Leu is surf city. You’re bound to see local and visiting surfers hanging out in the street cafés and at the beach. It is also a great spot for diving and a popular area for paragliding.

St-Leu has a noticeably more relaxed air about it than St-Gilles and, although it has some good hotels, it has not been totally colonised by tourists.

Visible from the coast road south of St-Leu, is Le Souffleur. When the sea is rough, this blowhole is spectacular.

On the RN1, just north of St-Leu is Kélonia, a former turtle farm, where sea turtles are now bred in captivity and studied. It is well worth a visit (see What to see in Western Réunion, page 327).

It has an excellent stock of leaflets and offers guided tours of the area.
