Mauritius - Eastern Reunion

The sparsely inhabited eastern region stretches from Ste-Suzanne in the north through St-André and Bras-Panon to St-Benoît, continuing southwards to La Pointe de la Table. It is a lush area of sugarcane, lychee fields and vanilla. In fact, a visit to one of the vanilla estates is one of the highlights of the east. The region includes the awe-inspiring active volcano, Piton-de-la-Fournaise.

Although it is the south which has earned the adjective sauvage (wild), it could equally be applied to the unspoilt east coast. This is the region which receives the most rain and it is the one into which violent cyclones tear when they rage in the western Indian Ocean between January and March. Most of the east coast consists of black volcanic rock or cliffs, against which rough seas lash continuously. The regular activity of Piton-de-la-Fournaise constantly adds to Réunion’s surface area, as lava flows out of the crater towards the eastern coast, solidifying as it hits the ocean.
