Sacred Valley

The Sacred Valley of the Incas or Urubamba Valley is a valley in the Andes of Peru, close to the Inca capital of Cusco and below the ancient sacred city of Machu Picchu.

It is fed by numerous rivers which descend through adjoining valleys and gorges. The Sacred Valley contains numerous archaeological remains and villages. The valley was appreciated by the Incas due to its special geographical and climatic qualities. It was one of the empire's main points for the extraction of natural wealth and the best place for maize production in Peru.

One of the most impressive elements of the Sacred Valley is the architecture. When most of the structures were built, the individual bricks weren’t cemented together. Instead, intricate engineering methods were used to join the stones together. It’s difficult to see the mechanism because the bricks interlock inside. The designs were well thought out and they still stand today.

There are also lots of water fountains everywhere. They were originally built to capitalize on the steep hills that stem from the mountains. This provided a steady stream of fresh water. The fountains still provide running water today.
