Located near the northern-most area of Thailand, the Golden Triangle was once the centre of opium poppy growing in the Thailand area, nowadays the only opium yo will find is in a museum. The opium crops have long since been replaced by small tourist villages, the roads are now lined with many small restaurants and roadside souvenir stalls.

The area is full of stunning natural scenery and ancient temples, and is growing more popular with tourists who want something other then the beach scene. A number of hotels and resorts have been built in the area to cater for the growing popularity.
Typical sights on a Golden Triangle tour is the town of Mai Sai, where you can cross the border into Burma to do some shopping; the small village of Sop Ruak, where the Ruak and Mekhong rivers meet; and finally the ancient city of Chiang Saen.
