Khao Lak

Khao Lak, the Thailand beach resort 80 km north of Phuket, is memorable for its pristine beauty and is also a popular departure point for scuba diving and exploration trips to the world-renowned Similan Islands. Inland are rubber and palm plantations that dot the coastal region, providing the economic base along with tourism and fishing for the local peoples - mostly Thai often with some Chinese ancestry  Most of the overseas visitors are European, notably from Scandinavia, Germany and the UK.

The tsunami of December 2004 caused deaths and ruined the economy in what at that time was Thailand’s fastest-growing tourist destination. Three years later, Khao Lak has bounced back with amazing vigour: much of the reconstruction and repairs are complete and tourism flourishes once more - in some respects its better than pre-tsunami days – with the locals feeling like a community again.

Though some prices have risen from pre-tsunami rates, Khao Lak is still a bargain compared to other regions of Thailand and Southeast Asia. Where Phuket is a destination for the majority, Khao Lak is for the experienced traveller who wants more secluded beaches, quiet nights and family oriented activities.

Inexpensive bungalows generally feature only basic amenities, whereas the five-star resorts such as Le Meridien, Ramada or Sarojin Resorts boast first-class amenities. In other words, there is something for everyone's budget.
