Holidays to Trang Thailand
One of Southern Thailand’s best kept secrets is Trang Province: it is the place to go to find near deserted islands. While most travellers use it primarily as a jumping off point for the nearby coral islands, Trang town is an interesting place in its own right, with many fine examples of Chinese architecture.
The town has won awards such as “the cleanest town in Thailand” for several consecutive years – mainly for its fresh water and produce: there are two markets – the Ta Klang and Municipal markets - in close proximity, considered to be among the cleanest in Thailand. The majority of residents in Trang are Chinese, descended from merchants from mainland China who settled in Trang. After several generations, they integrate Chines and Thai lifestyles – notably mixing Chinese and Thai agricultural methods – although they still uphold many aspects of traditional Chinese culture.
Most of Trang’s 47 islands are, indeed, uninhabited and are the responsibility of the Chao Mai National Park. They are notable for delicate, white sandy beaches, clear blue water, caves and a wide range of both shallow and deep water coral. The few that are inhabited have no more than two or three places to stay on them, ranging from simple bungalows to luxury resorts.
Koh Ngai, one of the more popular Islands, is fringed with excellent beaches and has a good reef perfect for snorkelling. Koh Chuak and Koh Waen also offer excellent snorkelling.
Dive sites in the area are generally much quieter than around Phuket. Most resorts will offer day trips to Koh Muk and the Emerald Cave – only recently discovered by helicopter and only accessible at low tide by swimming down an 80 m cave. This magnificent “hong” is one of the “must see” highlights of the area.
Transportation to the islands is via Pak Meng Pier - 40 km west of Trang Town, although it is possible to get there from Koh Phi Phi and Koh Lanta.
South of the town is the Banthad mountain offering forest trails, wildlife and over 20 waterfalls. To make the most from a holiday to Trang just contact one of our Trang experts by entering your details below.
