Pattaya Thailand Holidays

Pattaya is a Thailand’s most famous (or infamous) beach resort, attracting over six million visitors a year. It lies on the east coast of the Gulf of Thailand, about 165 km south east of Bangkok and was originally a small fishing village until it became an “r and r”  hot spot for US servicemen from all over south-east Asia. Today, it attracts tourists from all over the world, but increasingly from the former Soviet Union and East Asia.

If you would like to be the best informed tourist to Pattaya then just contact one of our experts by filling in your details on the right hand side.

Its 60s and 70s military associations led to a huge boom in prostitution, but in recent years, Pattaya (correctly pronounced "Putt-tuh-YAH" not "Patt-EYE-uh") has pushed hard to clean up its image and family-focused entertainment is increasingly available in efforts to present a more wholesome image. It is an especially popular vacation destination for families from Russia, Eastern Europe and Scandinavia, while the city also has a large international expatriate population, especially British and Russian residents.

While it would be naïve to think that the sex industry does not remain the city’s raison d' etre and ensures that Pattaya retains its position as one of the world's most renowned party destinations, there is far more to the city than its hostess bars and nightclub scene.

Pattaya Beach is situated alongside the city centre, close to shopping, hotels and bars. Years of unregulated jet-ski and speedboat activity has left the water along the beach polluted, aggravated by the practice of dumping sewage directly into the ocean.  However, much of it adjacent to the core of Pattaya's abundant nightlife scene, the area is less family-oriented than the North Pattaya, Na Klua and Jomtien beaches, so the actual demand in-water activity in this part is, sensibly, minimal. During daylight hours, most sections of the beach are covered by rented deckchairs run by local beverage vendors during daylight hours.

In contrast, Jomtien is a great beach for family vacationers and water sports enthusiasts, being residential area with beachside hotels, bungalow complexes, condominiums and restaurants. It offers everything from jet skis, parasailing and small sail boat (Hobie Cat) rental.  Its most visible landmark is the 56-story Pattaya Park tower - part of the Pattaya Park entertainment complex (which also features a water park, roller coaster, monorail and children's activities), soon to be overshadowed by what will be the tallest building in Thailand – the 367-metre tall residential Ocean Tower.
