Rastafari Village Tour in Jamaica Holidays

No trip to Jamaica is complete without experiencing the Rastafarian movement that generated the incredible Bob Marley! This tour showcases the life, skills and experiences of the Rastafari people in both an educative and supportive way, preserving the heritage and culture for years to come. Established in 2007, the Rastafari Indigenous Village (RIV) is located in Irwin on the outskirts of Montego Bay, Jamaica. It has had the backing of the Travel Foundation, an independent UK charity working to ensure tourism benefits people and the environment in overseas destinations. The mission of RIV's founders was to build a tangible, sustainable agro-artisan community to showcase the history, traditional practices and lifestyle of the Rastafari movement, started in Jamaica in the 1930s. The RIV site comprises a sheltered welcome area, an open kitchen area, a big hut and stage area for music and poetry, a living herb library, a meditative maze, a craft production area and small souvenir stall, a museum of Rastafari history, cottages for overnight stays, a wellness centre, print shop, music studio and radio station. You will be guided to the village where you will be introduced to the village leaders. Your time in the village will include visits to the school, homes and farms and you will have an opportunity to meet and reason with local rastas. You will be treated to many aspects of Rastafarian living such as Ital vegan food, herbs, drum making and music. After a delicious healthy meal you can join the community in the drumming and chanting that is a central part of their lives. Note: You will be met at the start of the tour and be transported most of the way by car but some of the way on foot. Part of the walk involves crossing a shallow river, so be sure to wear waterproof footwear, or take a spare pair of water shoes with you.
