Ile aux Aigrettes is a small island situated about 850m off the south-east coast of Mauritius. Unlike the mainland which is of volcanic origin, Ile aux Aigrettes is made up of coralline limestone and is home to the last remnants of dry coastal forest, once found around most of Mauritius. In 1965 the island was declared a nature reserve and since then there have been intense conservation efforts which have resulted in the restoration of the forest and the reintroduction of rare species This Mauritian Wildlife Fund eco-tour provides a guided trail around the sites of interest on the island. The tour starts with a short boat trip from Pointe Jerome on the mainland, followed by a 1.5 to 2 hour walking trail led by a trained ranger. The ranger will introduce the unique flora and fauna to you as well as share their local knowledge and the history of the island. Tailor-made tours can be arranged in advance for any special interests that you may have, for example photography or bird-watching.
